Community Spirit Edition 7 – November 2011

In this issue, we focus on the upcoming Christmas holidays – with plenty of hints and tips on how to make the most of this special time with your family & friends. Plus we feature Mount Albert – people, destinations and history.

After the All Blacks' success at the recent Rugby World Cup 2011, we are sure you will find our editors message below thought provoking – especially as this year draws to a close and you contemplate the start of new one.

I consider myself very lucky to have been raised in a sport-loving family; if we weren't playing, we could often be found watching any number of games. One observation that continues to strike me when watching a winning team is the unshakeable confidence and self-belief that emanates from every member … a belief not only that they CAN be successful … but, the clear belief that they DESERVE to be successful.

This is another great example of learning's from sport applying to all aspects of life.

In a society where, all too often, an expression of self-belief is banished as arrogance, we must recognise that self-belief is critical to success. Self confidence can be too easily damaged if we absorb too many negative influences from the world outside and allow them to influence our belief in what we can achieve. We must instead, hold stead-fast & trust that whatever our endeavour, we are going to make it happen. This will require conscious effort. It may require that a person instigates a significant change in their environment - and we must not be afraid of change, if the goal we aspire to is worthy.

I believe self-confidence enables a person to take risks, to challenge themselves and move on to new achievements; it provides the belief that if things go wrong they can be put right.

As Mark Victor Hansen says, "Don't wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful".

Christmas and our Summer Holiday period is drawing ever closer! I take this closing opportunity to wish all our readers a fabulous, festive Christmas and New Year filled with love laughter and fun. May 2012 deliver on the success that you deserve!
