It is 10 years since the Inaugural International Year of Volunteers, and through a General Assembly Resolution, the United Nations calls for this anniversary to be marked across the planet (www.worldvolunteerweb.org). Volunteering empowers people to take an active part in the development of their own communities, and responsibility for the needs of others. Volunteering often starts at home: but together, volunteers can change the world.

Volunteering for a not-for-profit organisation is one way to help. "Volunteering touches everyone - from the cradle to the grave", says Jenny Cochrane, Executive Director of Volunteering New Zealand.

New Zealand businesses are increasingly talking about corporate social responsibility – how they contribute to their communities with time, money and resources. This is a discussion we hope gets 'louder and louder'!

On the 16th of March the Goodwin Realty Group proudly received Ray White New Zealand's inaugural Community Award. A wonderful endorsement of the early achievements of Community Spirit only made possible with the support of our foundation Business Partner, Telstra Clear, and also Genesis, Dulux and Loan Market".

We will shortly be registering Community Spirit's not-for-profit Charitable Trust. We are excited to formalise the bringing together of a team of people that will share our passion, to restore and develop 'community spirit' across this fabulous part of Auckland that we call 'home'! If you, or a special member of our Community that you know, may be willing in this regard; please contact info@communityspirit.co.nz.

In closing, I extend our heartfelt sorrow to the people of Christchurch and the greater Canterbury Region as the devastation of Christchurch's Earthquake continues to unveil itself, and the region mourns loved ones lost. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Discussion is evolving as to the economic impact that the Earthquake will have. No-one has the answers yet. Save to say, the resilience displayed by the Canterbury people gives certainty to a future for Christchurch that our small nation will be proud to support.
